The Skovgaard Museum houses a library consisting of books inherited from the Skovgaard family—particularly Joakim Skovgaard and Bente Skovgaard. New books are also continuously added to the collection through an exchange agreement with other Danish art museums.

Some of the museum’s volunteers have spent approximately a year and a half registering the books in a database, making it possible to search the library and locate volumes that are not found in many other libraries. The Skovgaard Museum’s library contains around 4,000 books.

The library is a reference library, meaning that the books cannot be borrowed and taken home. However, you can arrange a visit with the museum to study the books on site.

A number of the books feature fine leather bindings decorated with designs by Joakim Skovgaard or Thorvald Bindesbøll.

Thanks are due to the Skovgaard Museum’s volunteers Niels Bjerre, Erik Velling Hansen, Solveig Holm-Jensen, and Mette Iversen for their significant efforts. Thanks also to Viborg Central Library and ARoS for their assistance in developing the database.
